Lotus Wight @ Old Church Theatre
Lotus Wight has traveled the world playing banjo, jaw-harp, and harmonica with Sheesham, Lotus and Son for almost 20 years.
His latest solo recording has recently been nominated for the “Stan Rogers Traditional Vocalist of the Year” by the Canadian Folk Music Awards.
“Original Works for Voice and Banjo” was written in Peterborough, Ontario and recorded in Chelsea, Quebec.
Wight performs original songs that sound antique; he uses his banjo and jaw-harp to punctuate his stories. He plays musical oddities of his own invention like the Contrabass Harmoniphoneum; a kind of a bass-harmonica-horn contraption that looks as old as it sounds.
Wight also draws from a comprehensive collection of old time songs that he has carefully curated in his travels across the North American continent.

BIO
After studying Jazz at Humber College in 1998, young Lotus Wight joined an itinerant dance band, playing bass for square dances, kitchen parties and old time jams from all over the US and Canada. This was a highly formative time for Wight, as he learned fiddle, banjo, jaw harps, ham-bone, and other folk arts in the very places of their birth. After 8 years of steady travel and study he formed Sheesham and Lotus with fiddler/singer Teilhard Frost. Together they made six albums and toured the world. In 2016 Lotus Wight released his first solo album and earned a Canadian Folk Music Award for “Best Traditional Solo Recording”.
