Gregory Hoskins
Gregory Hoskins returns to the Old Church Theatre with With Adam Hay on drums and Lisa Hodgson on vox and keys with songs from Vain and Alone, Beggar Heart, The King of Good Intentions and more.
Gregory Hoskins’ career has spanned 28 years, 11 albums, and recording contracts in Canada, the U.S., Germany, and Asia. Critically lauded since the 1991 release of Moon Come Up (True North/Sony), he has flown faithfully and agilely under the radar.
His latest studio recording, Vain + Alone, was made available in 2017 and found Hoskins returning to his DIY roots
as he performed, engineered, and mastered the 10 new songs. “…lyrics are real and bittersweet, arrangements are nimble…” says Brad Wheeler of The Globe and Mail and his singing “…is nothing less than a revelation,” says Ian Keary, of fROOTS.
He collaborates regularly with Toronto’s renowned The Art of Time Ensemble, most notably in The Poem/The Song with Margaret Atwood, Doghouse Roses with Michael Ondaatje, and 2018’s Leonard Cohen tribute, A Singer Must Die. He has developed and facilitated a creation process with indigenous artists, collaborated with incarcerated women on a collection of songs written and recorded in prisons as part of “Why The Caged Bird Sings”, and has appeared with author/activist Stephen Jenkinson (Die Wise) on sold out reading/concert tours of the US, Australia, New Zealand, and the UK. In October of 2017, the pair released Nights of Grief and Mystery, a live recording culled from those tours.
2018 will see the release of Hoskins’ 12th independent recording, Witness!, with acclaimed guitarist Kevin Breit at the producer/engineer/arranger/performer helm. Work has begun on A Certain Kind of Darkness, a cycle of 5 songs created with survivors of the Huronia Regional Centre, an institution closed down in 2009 and subject of a successful class action law suit.
